How Does Your Health Affect Your Success?
John-Kelly Burrus, a 17 year old athlete and high school student wrote this blog while in training at MKB Excellent Executive Coaching
“Your body feels when things are right or wrong. Pursuing your objectives, will lead you to success even though you may stumble on failures. Overcoming failures makes you stronger and more experienced. It then becomes part of your success.” John Kelly Burrus
Your health determines your performance and the more you perform, the greater your chances of success. You are the owner of your body and mind and should be able to feel when you are on the right track mentally and physically.
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. (World health organization WHO)
Your physical health is crucial in understanding your overall health and how it affects your success. Physical health means being in good condition, being active and eating the right nutritious foods. Think of your body as your most important asset in your life. Having a good, balanced diet will improve your performance by fuelling your body with the right ingredients. Your body functions like a car. Think of your body as a Ferrari. If you do not fuel your car with the right oils and gas your car will not function at its full potential. Remember, eat well! (Low fat, veggies, fruits, oats…)
Be the best version of yourself and strive for the best at everything you do.
Another type of health is mental health. It is feeling happy and always being motivated to be your better self.
How you act and what you want to achieve comes from the most powerful part of your body; your mind. Being in a good mental state will definitely affect your overall performance, which is another step towards success. Socioeconomic status, education, relationships and appearance all have an effect on the mind. Sometimes you cannot control the situation and the environment you live in but being optimistic has a self-fulfilling effect and you will see greater results in the long run.
“A healthy attitude is contagious but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier” Tom Stoppard.
Be an example
Try your maximum to be physically and mentally healthy, you will become a leader by example and more people will admire your actions. You don’t have to be a leader of a company to be the carrier. You can apply this attitude to any job. Optimism is key in reaching your goal. If you are always willing to give a hundred percent to your actions and try your best, people will subliminally do the same. Try showing up to work with the right mindset that will not only benefit you but others around you, Get to work!
My personal experience
As captain of my soccer team, being in good mental and physical health is essential not only for my performance but also for others’ on my team. I always need to be an example for my teammates and show them optimism as they elected me to be their leader. I cannot disappoint them. Even in a game’s hardest moments when the tension is palpable, when we are losing or in disagreements, I need to be an example, focus on the game, not be distracted and have my teammates do the same. I feel honoured to be a leader and an example to others striving to achieve the same success. It takes a willingness to do whatever it takes at practice, or when winning a game. Creating the right atmosphere within the team is crucial. We create an environment for each other. We are family. So try acting as an inspiring, focused example and a leader with your colleagues. Then enjoy the benefits.
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear” (Buddha)
Repetition is key
Repetition is key to success, so make sure you are being efficacious in your actions. There are certain approaches you could take that will help guide you to good mental and physical health. By writing these facts in a notebook or some place visible, it will condition your mind to follow these steps that are beneficial to your success. Think of it as a written contract with yourself and take the time to understand and reflect on these ideas, success is not a race it’s a marathon and by following these recommendations you are already a step towards success.
